The Index 2010 is the second Index report. It ranks 27 pharmaceutical companies on their efforts to provide access to medicines, vaccines and diagnostic tests to people living in 88 countries. The countries included in the Index were chosen from among those classified by United Nations Development Program‟s Human Development Index as having low or medium levels of human development.

The Index covers 33 priority diseases, including neglected tropical diseases, as well as the 10 most important communicable diseases and the 10 most important non-communicable diseases in terms of their health burden in the countries covered by the Index. The companies include 20 originator companies – those who primarily market patented drugs they have developed – and seven companies whose primary business is the production and sale of generic medicines.

The Access to Medicine Index is an independent initiative that ranks the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies according to what they are doing for the millions of people in developing countries who do not have reliable access to medicine.
