In an article for the Dutch de Volkskrant, the Foundation's Research Programme Manager,Ā Claudia MartĆnez, speaks about the vulnerable position of low- and middle-income countries in the global medication chain.Ā

"Veel arme landen hebben de expertise en capaciteit niet om te controleren welke medicijnen het land binnenkomen. Of ze beschikken niet over de juiste laboratoria om te blijven testen en monitoren."

The article discusses the temporary ban on the sale of potentially toxic cough syrup in Indonesia following the death of 99 children.Ā Earlier in the month, 70 children in The Gambia died after ingesting a syrup containing high doses of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol. The Indonesian authorities are working with the World Health Organization (WHO) to find out how the drugs came on the market and whether there is a link with the drugs that caused the deaths of children in The Gambia.
