India Covid crisis: World’s poorer countries at ‘breaking point’, as suppliers urged to end oxygen inequality

Dean Kirby for inews.co.uk writes about the COVID-19 linked oxygen crisis in India.

Writing about the ongoing oxygen crisis in India, which has been exacerbated by COVID-19, Kirby examines the worldwide oxygen shortage that has most impacted low- and middle-income countries, including Brazil, Peru, Bangladesh and parts of Russia, during the pandemic.

Margo Warren, Government Engagement and Policy Manager for the Access to Medicine Foundation, explains the reasons behind the shortage, including "overburdened rural clinics requiring equipment and skills to keep oxygen flowing, and a lack of consistent supplies."

Further, Margo notes, "There are only a handful of companies that produce and distribute medical oxygen and they charge high prices.

We have seen some action from companies but much more is needed, and investors should engage these companies to step up their game and call for reports on concrete actions in tackling this issue.

Companies need to recognise this is an emergency issue and provide greater access at lower prices.”
