POLITICO Health Care Summit: Marijn Verhoef to discuss Europe's fight against AMR
Date
28 October 2022
Location
Brussels, Belgium
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is rising faster than expected. In 2019 alone, 1.27 million people died of drug-resistant infections, most of them in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
This urgent global health issue will form part of the programme for the 2022 POLITICO Health Care Summit, where Marijn will take part in a panel discussion to share his insights on AMR.
He will be joined by two other experts to discuss the question:Â 'AMR:Â Can Europe get ahead of the deadly microbial curve?'
Panelists
Deb Mangone, Vice President, Cluster 2 Lead, Hospital Business at Pfizer
Sarah Wiener, member of European Parliament and Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance
Moderator
Helen Collis, reporter at POLITICO Europe
Key issues that will be addressed
The discussion will consider where Europe stands in its battle against AMR; the impact of COVID-19 on the development of therapies to tackle AMR; the progress in bacterial and viral testing; and market incentive models that encourage drug makers to develop new antibiotics.
Marijn will share insights from the Foundation's 2021 AMR Benchmark, as well as other reports from our Antimicrobial Resistance Research Programme. These include a recent paper assessing companies' actions to expand access to antibiotics and antifungals in low- and middle-income countries, and a report on the challenges facing biotech companies in antimicrobial R&D and the ways they are seeking to overcome hurdles and bring new products to market.
The POLITICO Health Care Summit 2022 will take place both virtually and in-person between 27 and 28 October. View more on the event and the programme here.Â
