Who we are

Funders

As an independent non-profit organisation, the continuity of the Access to Medicine Foundation’s work to advance global health equity relies largely on long-term funding from supporting organisations, including governments, private philathropic foundations and investment firms.

The Access to Medicine Foundation’s mission is supported by funders who share our commitment to improving access to essential medicines for people in low- and middle-income countries and for those most affected by gaps in access. Their support enables us to deliver evidence-based research, engage global health stakeholders, and drive meaningful change where it is needed most.

The Access to Medicine Foundation is funded by the Gates Foundation, the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, the Wellcome Trust, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and Stewart Investors. These partners contribute to different research areas and programmatic operations within the Foundation:

Gates Foundation

The Gates Foundation has been a longstanding partner of the Foundation, supporting the Access to Medicine Index in accelerating pharmaceutical companies’ efforts to improve access to medicine in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This collaboration aims to drive greater transparency and accountability across the pharmaceutical industry, moving the needle together on practices that expand equitable access to essential medicines and health technologies worldwide.

The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust

Through its commitment to helping the global type 1 diabetes community live safer, better and more fulfilling lives, the Helmsley Charitable Trust supports the Foundation’s Diabetes Care Programme. It also strengthens the interconnectedness of health systems by supporting the Index and the Foundation’s broader strategic direction, including the Generic and Biosimilar Medicine Manufacturers Programme. Together, these initiatives coordinate efforts to catalyse change and drive the availability and affordability of insulin and other essential diabetes care products.

Wellcome

Infectious diseases are among the greatest global health challenges of our time. With the goal of accelerating interventions and improving understanding of critical health issues, Wellcome supports the Foundation’s AMR and Index programmes. As collaborative thought partners, Wellcome and the Foundation align to drive sustained and impactful change across Wellcome’s core pillars: infectious diseases, mental health, climate and health.

Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Being based in the Netherlands, the Foundation is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs through a longstanding partnership on accelerating progress in expanding access to essential medicine for those who need it the most. This collaboration works together on the Ministry’s priority areas, including sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), international policy coherence and multilateral cooperation, and global access to medicines and health products.

UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office

With ambition to improve health globally and build resilience to future threats, the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has been a longstanding partner of the Foundation in working together to drive company progress. The FCDO collaborates with the Foundation across all programmes, placing emphasis on the meaningful inclusion of women and stakeholders from LMICs.

Stewart Investors

Recognising the unique potential of generic and biosimilar manufacturers to expand access to medicines in LMICs, Stewart Investors have focused on the Foundation’s Generic and Biosimilar Medicine Manufacturers Programme, while supporting the Foundation with core funding. This collaboration has enabled a broad and sustained impact on the industry.
