Ouder dan veertig werd je in 1811 meestal niet in Nederland. Dat is nu gelukkig heel anders. De afgelopen twee eeuwen is de gezondheidszorg gigantisch verbeterd, in Nederland en in de wereld. Maar niet overal, en niet voor iedereen. Nog steeds hebben twee miljard mensen in ontwikkelingslanden geen toegang tot betaalbare medicijnen. Ze sterven te vroeg, aan ziekten waar niemand nog aan hoeft te overlijden. Heb je de pech in Congo te leven en je loopt een flinke longontsteking op, dan is de kans klein dat er voor jou betaalbare antibiotica te koop zijn. Zo blijft de gemiddelde levensverwachting in dit land, anno 2011, op 40 jaar steken.
