Operation Vaccines: Access All Areas

Writing in the April edition of EMG's GOLD magazine, author Michaila Byrne investigates how pharma companies are taking action to improve COVID-19 vaccine access.

In the article, Michaila Byrne examines 'vaccinationalism' and investigates how the COVID-19 pandemic has cast light on the issue of access to medicine, particularly for those living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). 

Byrne looks to the Access to Medicine Index as a benchmark in tracking pharmaceutical companies' access to medicine efforts prior to the pandemic. Claudia Martínez, Research Programme Manager for the Access to Medicine Index, is quoted: “Companies can adopt a number of different strategies when it comes to delivering and improving access and creating equitable pricing strategies. They can also manage their intellectual property responsibly and wave patent rights, engage in voluntary licensing, and also engage in donation programmes.”
