Jayasree K. Iyer on BBC: How has COVID-19 exposed the global shortage of medical oxygen?

In this episode of the BBC World Service, Jayasree K. Iyer joins Julian Worricker to discuss the worldwide shortage of medical oxygen.

Programme host Julian Worricker explains that although oxygen is the most abundant element on Earth, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed a stark disparity in access to this essential medicine for those living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Jayasree K. Iyer, Executive Director of the Access to Medicine Foundation, joins the programme 34 minutes in to discuss this global oxygen shortage.

Jayasree discusses how the pandemic has exasperated existing oxygen shortages, as well as the logistical problems of supply and delivery in many low- and middle-income countries. She also explains how the Access to Medicine Foundation has partnered with the Every Breath Counts Coalition to stimulate medical oxygen companies, investors, and global health agencies to explore options to ramp up oxygen access for people living in LMICs.
