Access to Medicine Foundation Spotlights How Generic Manufacturers are Responding to Africa’s Changing Healthcare Needs

The article highlights challenges that generic medicine manufacturers face in scaling their operations in Africa, which are contributing to gaps in access to medicine across the continent. However, it also emphasises positive trends covered in the report, namely, that regulatory harmonisation, regional trade integration and better-coordinated procurement are creating positive momentum toward addressing gaps and improving healthcare equity.

Claudia Martínez, Director of Research at the Access to Medicine Foundation is quoted: “Our research shows encouraging progress – from growing local manufacturing to the emergence of new partnership models – but also highlights that companies cannot succeed in isolation. Coordinated action between stakeholders will be essential to ensuring affordable, life-saving medicines can reach patients consistently, sustainably and at scale.”
