4 principles for urgent pharma action to combat COVID-19

Drawing on the findings from the 2021 Access to Medicine Index, the Norwegian government, which co-chairs the Facilitation Council of the ACT-Accelerator, has proposed four principles for urgent pharma action to ensure equity to COVID-19 vaccines and treatments in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

In this piece, authors Dag-Inge Ulstein, Minister of International Development for the Norwegian Government, and John-Arne Røttingen, Ambassador for Global Health for the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, use findings from the 2021 Access to Medicine Index to identify four areas where pharmaceutical companies can take urgent action to ensure equal access to COVID-19 vaccines and treatments:

File for registration rapidly, widely and on the basis of the most rigorous standards
Price health technologies fairly
Expand production and supply capacity
Transparency from all actors
