Improving access to sickle cell disease care

Millions of people living with sickle cell disease continue to face significant barriers to diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care. Through a new initiative, the Access to Medicine Foundation will work with pharmaceutical companies and other partners to strengthen sustainable access to sickle cell disease care across Africa.

Despite advances in disease-modifying therapies, diagnostics and clinical care, sickle cell disease remains overlooked as a global health priority. This is particularly true in Sub-Saharan Africa, which bears nearly 80% of the global disease burden.

For many people living with sickle cell disease, access to essential health products remains fragmented and, in many settings, dependent on donor-supported programmes rather than sustainable health systems. With high-burden countries and communities being overlooked, millions continue to experience preventable illness, disability and premature death, with children and young adults disproportionately affected.

Addressing these challenges requires coordinated action to strengthen health systems, align stakeholders and expand access to essential health products.

Turning evidence into action

For more than 20 years, the Access to Medicine Foundation has been an independent, non-profit catalyst for change, using evidence to drive action that expands access to essential health products for people living in low- and middle-income countries.

The Foundation drives change through a proven model that combines rigorous evidence-based research with strategic engagement with pharmaceutical and healthcare companies to identify opportunities to expand access to essential health products. By unleashing the power of institutional investors and bringing together pharmaceutical companies, governments and global health partners, we help turn evidence into action and commitments into measurable impact.

The value we bring

Substantial public health benefits

2.6M deaths averted & 808M patients reached by 2030

Exceptional value for money

~$60 USD return per $1 invested

Unified action plan on sickle cell disease

The Access to Medicine Foundation aims to strengthen access to sickle cell disease care across Africa through a unified action plan. By aligning priorities, defining the role of pharmaceutical companies across the continuum of care, and supporting country-level guidelines, procurement policies and market incentives, we will create a shared roadmap for action.

We will then engage pharmaceutical companies to scale up action by tracking progress, identifying new opportunities to expand access and promoting best practices that can be scaled across countries.

By expanding sustainable access to medicines for sickle cell disease, people can survive, thrive and build healthier futures for themselves, their families and their communities.

Invest in access

Your contribution will help scale our evidence-based research and change-making efforts, increasing access to essential health products for people who need them most.

We are seeking to raise €300,000 to launch this initiative and accelerate access to sickle cell disease care across Africa.

Every contribution will help bring us closer to a future where people living with sickle cell disease can survive, thrive and build healthier lives.

Donate today to help transform access to sickle cell disease care across Africa.
