Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a critical global health challenge, and at the 2024 United Nations General Assembly, world leaders reaffirmed their commitment to tackling this issue. A major outcome was the call for the Quadripartite organisations to establish the Independent Panel for Evidence for Action Against AMR (IPEA), aimed at driving evidence-based policymaking.
To support this initiative, the Centre for Global Development (CGD) is convening a roundtable discussion to gather expert perspectives on the Panel’s role in advancing AMR policy, its governance structure and operational approach. The discussion will also explore the types of scientific research that should guide evidence-based action, as well as the panel’s goals and outputs in shaping effective policy interventions.
Marijn Verhoef, Director of Operations and Interim Director of Government Engagement & Policy at the Access to Medicine Foundation, will share his input in shaping IPEA’s credibility and effectiveness. Drawing on key findings from the Foundation’s AMR Programme, including previous iterations of the AMR Benchmark, he will underscore how private sector engagement can drive meaningful progress, reinforcing the Panel’s goal to identify effective solutions to this global health challenge.
The insights from this roundtable will be compiled into a policy paper and presented at the “Lessons Learned” Dialogue, to be hosted by the Nigerian Academy of Sciences and the US National Academy of Medicine in Nigeria in April 2025.
