Generic and biosimilar medicines, produced at high volumes and typically sold at lower prices than original brands, have the potential to revolutionise the healthcare industry. To highlight their significance and impact, the Access to Medicine Foundation is partnering with Vizuri Health Dynamics to host a roundtable discussion at the 78th session of the World Health Assembly (WHA), titled “Enabling the Manufacturing of Innovative and Essential Medicines in Africa.”
This roundtable will bring together key stakeholders to explore actionable solutions for accelerating pharmaceutical manufacturing in Africa. Despite increased investment in the continent’s pharmaceutical sector, access to essential and innovative medicines remains limited due to affordability and availability challenges.
The discussion will explore the critical partnerships needed to drive local production, including for innovative medicines. It will also examine lessons from past initiatives that have shaped regional manufacturing and the key policy and regulatory frameworks that support this effort - ranging from capacity building and technology transfer to procurement strategies.
The roundtable will bring attendees together to develop actionable strategies for a sustainable ecosystem that ensures quality-assured medicines are produced in Africa, for African patients, and beyond.
