The majority of people who die from cancer live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Yet access to medicines and treatments for cancer are not as widely available in these regions compared to higher-income countries.
The Netherlands-based organisation Inspire2Live’s annual congress provides a forum for representatives from associations, non-profit organisations and academia to discuss initiatives aimed at reducing the global cancer burden through prevention and intervention.
In addition to spotlighting gaps in access to cancer medicine in LMICs, topics for this year’s congress will include molecular diagnostics, early diagnosis and paediatric cancers.
As a researcher within the Foundation’s Expanding Access and Pricing Unit, Tarryn will speak during the session entitled “Access to medicines for the global patient,” joined by:
Callie Weber, NCD Market Access Specialist, IDA Foundation
Giulia Segafredo, Senior NCDs Access Manager, Medicine Patent Pool
Piarella Peralta, Senior Patient Advocacy Specialist, Illumina
Tarryn plans to present the Foundation’s research-backed perspectives on pharmaceutical companies’ role in ensuring patients living in LMICs have access to the cancer drugs they manufacture and sell. Within this vein, she will provide specific examples of how the Foundation has successfully worked to help drive change in this area.
She will also share how the Foundation has increased its focus on the patient’s perspective in its work, and how other organisations can do the same.
